WILLPOWER

The ability to freely express one’s decisions. Where there is will, there is a way. By definition, a Mason is a free man who comes to and remains in the Lodge of his own free will. This implies freedom of conscience, decision, and action. This theme is present in the initiation ritual. The candidate, of his own free will and consent, requests admission to the mysteries of Freemasonry. Once initiated, the Mason consciously uses the hammer of willpower to strike the protrusions and imperfections of the rough stone, removing what hinders his pursuit of wisdom. Willpower establishes, sustains, and enables the realization of the individual and universal temples.

Willpower is linked to Strength. “Strength of will” relates to an individual’s capacity to become a better version of themselves. It is no coincidence that, of the two columns at the temple’s entrance, the apprentice Mason’s column is Boaz, known as the column of Strength. It is through the strength of will that the apprentice Mason (which we all are) advances in their spiritual journey.

A point arises: Generally, a Freemason is not an ascetic detached from worldly contingencies. He is part of the society of his time, functioning and flowing within it. We live with our passions, many of which aid in the pursuit of wisdom: the passion for study, for art, for helping others.

Hence the importance of willpower and discernment (the hammer and chisel) to evaluate what helps or hinders our spiritual path; to carve the rough stone, stripping it of its rough edges—our prejudices, selfishness, and even fears—without breaking it.

Freemasonry, through its rituals and teachings, fosters the cultivation of willpower. Through willpower, the Mason engages in introspection to improve, transcend himself, find meaning in his existence, and work toward it, which raises his level of consciousness.
